According to Mr. Estabrook a coal furnace needs to be converted into an oil-burning operation. He explained that the $25,000 cost would, over time, save money.
• Insurance rates are increasing significantly. As an example, last year’s allotment for workmen’s compensation was $7,830; the proposed allotment wo.uld be $14,558.
• According to Mr. Estabrook, “textbook rental fees are staggering.” To help parents, he is proposing $5 reduction in payment per student. Last year’s textbook allotment was $2,200; the proposed budget asks for an allotment of $7,200.
• Last year’s allotment of $35,000 for the new roof on the school would be dropped by $25,000 because, said Mr. Estabrook, “we are out of the roofing business.” ($10,000 was left in that line item for repainting and other work.)
Mr. Estabrook concluded his budget proposal with a concern about the Reagan administration’s lack of support for public education.
