To the editor:

As a working farmer who supplies the preponderance of labor on the farm I derive my income from, I feel demeaned and insulted by last week’s lead editorial. I am not against a modest tax increase to make teachers’ salaries competitive with those paid by surrounding counties. The most important crop grown by a county is its children. To deny our children the best possible education and the freedom to choose their future seems mean and shortsighted.

At the moment we are supplying our future generations with the minimum education mandated by federal and state authorities. Rather, we should be striving to provide the best possible education and future for our younger generations.

The teachers of our school system are the operators of our educational machine. Any machine is as effective as its operator. I would not
