All the pieties mohthed by the supervisors each year about how great our schools really are, after they once again fail to pay teachers a high enough salary to keep them
here, are just that — empty worlds that are intended to hide the reality as they turn their backs on the difficult school situation. Let us not kid ourselves that a school system with a 37 percent turnover is a school system of satisfied, long-term teachers who are willing, nay, happy, to bear the emotional and financial brunt of the supervisors’ contempt. Rappahannock children and teachers inevitably suffer when the rest of us neglect them. We are turning our backs on the future of America when we do so.
You do no service to this county, when you in effect insult our children by ignoring the reality of what is happening to Rappahannock’s public schools. You need to talk to teachers, to parents who have children in the schools (especially those who attend board meetings and know what’s going on), and to parents who have taken their children out of the schools and put them in private schools. To rely, as you seem to have, on the advice of people with one view, is inadequate journalism.
