In the 2nd half, Manassas Park stepped up its full and half court defensive pressure which forced Rappahannock into several turnovers. Park converted many of these turnovers into easy layup baskets. They pulled ahead for good midway through the 3rd quarter to take a 5145 lead at the end of three. In the fourth quarter Rappahannock tried to stage a comeback, but could get no closer than 4 points. The final tally was Manassas Park 71 and Rappahannock 62. Leading Manassas Park were John Lee with 27 points and Eugene Baltimore with 10 (just 2 in the first half.) Tom Jenkins scored 31 for Rappahannock and got support from Richard Tribino with 9 and Godfrey Freeman with 8 and Garri Jackson with 7.
Rappahannock coached by Joel Voorhees, advanced to the Group A, Region B playoffs at Western Albemarle because of its second place district standing behind regular season and tournament champ Manassas Park. The Panthers played Skyline District champ Buffalo Gap from Augusta County at Western Albemarle High School on March 5th. Rappahannock’s very presence in the regionals ranks the team in the top 24 single-A schools in the state in basketball. If the Panthers beat Buffalo Gap last night, they will be in an elite group of 16 which will play on Friday night, March 7. The Buffalo Gap-Rappahannock winner draws defending stage single A champ Cumberland tomorrow at 9:00 p.m. at Western Albemarle High in Crozet. The regional semifinal winners play Saturday night with the winners proceeding to the state final four in Harrisonburg on March 14.
