The same ’ean be'said about another large part of Rappahannock’s population: retired persons on fixed!4 incomes. Every penny increase in the real estate tax rate has a hard impact on these citizens.
This situation has resulted in Rappahannock because the real estate tax is currently our only way of raising significant funds. As county costs have increased significantly in recent years—salaries, jail expansion, roof repairs, etc.—the real estate tax rate has jumped dramatically, severely straining the budgets of farmers and fixed income citizens. In the coming year or two We face additional large expenditures for trash disposal, an animal shelter, high school expansion, and —without a doubt—higher salaries for county employees.
