Wakefield tied for
first place

Students in Pre-calculus and Calculus at Wakefield School are participating in the Virginia Mathematics League Contest and with four of the six tests completed are tied for first place standing in the region. The series of six tests is administered once a month and consists of six problems to be completed in 30 minutes. The team score is determined from the top five scoring students in each test.
Wakefield’s cumulative score for the four tests is 98 points which ties them with Stafford Senior High School for the first place standing. With only two contests remaining in the school year, Charles McGlothlin, Chairman of Wakefield’s Math Department, feels his students are in a strong position to capture the first place award. The school’s standing in the contest ranks it in the top £7 percent of schools-in Virginia.
In addition, 94 students in grades 9-12 participated this week in .another math contest. The American High School Mathematics Examination, a national competition, was administered to students this week.
This test consists of a series of rigorous Algebra and Geometry problems. The team score for the top three students in this exam was 206. The top-scoring students were Sean Bennett of Boston, Larry Tarr of Warrenton and William Meuse of Berryville.
