To the editor:
Your recent editorial “Enough” has left us teachers puzzled.
Do you mean we shouldn’t even ask???
The teachers’ pay proposal (which was NOT an “impassioned demand,” despite your editorializing) is the required first step in the county-mandated budget process. - Your judgment that it is a “ridiculous obsession” means that your opinion is either:
1) that the county budget process, the “spring ritual,” needs changing;
2) that the teachers do not deserve a pay raise; or
3) that the raise could cause hardship to the taxpayers in this county.
However:
1) You made no suggestions for / improving the budget process.
2) You did not say we didn’t deserve a raise;
3) Since there were no school revenue or expense figures available at the time the teachers were asked to make their proposal, how could you or anyone make this judgment at that time?
In fact, even now, the School Board budget is in the process of being developed, and talk about raises in the tax rate is at best premature, and at worst, deliberately provocative. So, either you are guilty of deciding your position before all the facts are in, or you are beginning the great American budget ploy, “Talk about raising taxes and scare everyone, including the teachers.”
This position on the part of your newspaper does not exhibit responsible citizenship, or even a responsible attitude on the part of the media in Rappahannock County. Remem
