Dawn Fisher — First place, Leslie Nichols — second place and David Fisher — third. Other instrumentalists were Doretha Butler, Pamela Butler, Dee Dee Salmon, Sean Wayland and Camilla Jones.
Judges Pam Gardner and Kim Kiec are on the music faculty at Warren County Junior High School. After each contestant’s performance they used their expertise to complete a score sheet. There was a maximum of 100 points total—25 points for faithfulness to score, 25 points for technique, 25 points for interpretation, five points for stage presence, 10 points for complexity of composition and 10 points for memory.
Mr. Nichols concluded by inviting the Bland Music contestants to be the club’s guests at the Corner Post Restaurant at their next meeting. Refreshments were provided after the contest at which time certificates were given to all participants. First place winners Tara Fisher and Gina Fletcher were encouraged to attend the regional competition to be held in March.
Tara Fisher has participated for two years in the local competition. She won first place last year in vocals as well as first place this year in instrumentals. “I decided to play the piano this year to see how I would do,” she said. “I think the contest provides an excellent opportunity to get experience for other contests where you have to do solos and you have to memorize music. It’s a nice place to start.”
Tara believes the key to winning is “to relax and have a good time.”
When Tara was asked about the regional contests she said, “The regional are a lot more formal and the participants are more competitive.”
Tara was asked if she intended to go to the regionals again. “Definitely!” she replied.
“This is one of the cultural events in the county to just come and listen to and enjoy,” commented instrumental teacher Kathy Hewitt. “For the participants it’s good practice for the Spring Band competitions. This has double the pressure though because the music has to be memorized.”
Miss Hewitt summarized the event by saying, “I think it’s great that the Lions Club sponsors this for these students. It gives the ‘fine arts’ people a chance to be recognized.”
