The film performances of Fess Parker and John Wayne aside, facts now indicate that Davy Crockett and six of his Tennesseans were taken alive at the end of the battle. They were brought before Santa Anna, who ordered his staff officers to kill the survivors as they stood with their hands bound, much to the disgust of their initial captors.
Another recent change involves the renewed interest in the role played by the Tejanos at the Alamo. In a controversy that continues to this day, the contribution of the Mexican-Texans in the defense of the Alamo is being more positively evaluated.
One Tejano, Capt. Juan Nepomucean Seguin, a close friend of Steven Austin and Jim Bowie, commanded a company of scouts that supported the Texans. Seguin was at the Alamo with Col. Travis, and made a dangerous ride through Mexican lines to bring reinforcements just before the battle began. He did not return before the battle was over, but many of his men, who stayed behind to fight, died beside the Texans.
A year later, it was Seguin who returned to bury the ashes of the defenders.
. While the familiar image of the Alamo is characterized by the dome-shaped facade on the. front of the chapel, the actual building in 1836 was a flat, roofless, two-story ruin. The distinctive masonry dome was added by the U. S. Army years later, after Texas joined the Union. At that time, the Alamo was being used as an Army supply depot.
Regardless of revisionism and forthcoming fact, Americans will always look back upon the Alamo with pride. It reminds us of a part of ourselves that will not submit to tyranny, and is ready to make sacrifices in order to gain or maintain our freedom.
