“It was a horrible disappointment to me,” Mrs. Wittle said, “since it was to be Wickery’s last ride.”
Wickery, fourth place winner at the North American Championships last August in California, was scheduled for retirement after the World Championships. She will now become, as Mrs. Wittle says, “a Wickery Factory.”
Nevertheless, Lynn Wittle swallowed her sour grapes and accompanied the team and her husband to lend a hand on foot. Lee Wittle served as Chef d’Equite, French for Chief of Equipment or coach of the United States team.
Altogether the U.S. took five horses and riders to the championship ride, three from California, one from Arkansas and one from Amissville with two other Virginians along to lend a hand.
The course turned out to be a lot tougher than the U.S. team .had anticipated. They expected an easy course after studying altitude and
