Mr. Gilkey said that the county would probably work out some type of leasing arrangement for the landfill site, “since the regulations for a private landfill are so strenuous that (the Lees) probably could not meet them . . . i,t would be the county’s responsibility . . . we’d have to have someone there to monitor it.”
The third petition addressed additional concerns about waste from outside Rappahannock County being deposited in the landfill. Both Mr. Gilkey and Mr. McCarthy emphatically denied that there has been any consideration of accepting wastes of any type from outside the county.
“I don’t think either party would be interested in being party to the operation of such a landfill,” Mr. McCarthy stated.
Mr. Gilkey flatly said, “No out of county trash will be accepted.” He added that, if the state were to grant a permit for sludge disposal at the site, “and we hope it will be . . . only sludge from the Sperryville plant will be accepted.”
