RICHMOND — The General Assembly Saturday adopted a $422 million roadbuilding program that ensures the widening of Route 17 in Fauquier County will be a priority project.
Residents and officials in Rappahannock County have been concerned about the status of the Route 17 project since the road was closed to truck traffic in November of 1984. The closure has meant an increase in truck traffic on Routes 522 and 211 in Rappahannock. There has also been a corresponding increase in traffic accidents involving trucks in the county. Four of the seven highway fatalities so far this year came as a result of truck-automobile crashes.
Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Charles Waddell (DLoudoun/Fairfax) said it is unclear when the extra bypass lanes and the overpass included in the funding proposals would be added to the current Warrenton bypass project, which should be completed by year’s end.
Del. Kenneth Rollins (R-Leesburg) said Route 17 improvements are at the “top” of the state’s “critical needs” list and will be fully funded as a result of the General Assembly’s actions.
