William Carrigan, owner of Avon Hall in Washington, last week used an unusual techinque to rid his home of an infestation of powder post beetles, which bore into wood and destroy it from the inside.
Mr. Carrigan explained that the insects cannot be exterminated by traditional methods, since surface sprays will not reach inside the wood where the beetles have burrowed. So he called on Paramount Pest Control, which specializes in difficult extermination jobs, using a different method.
The company sealed the entire house inside a plastic “bubble” made of 40 by 100 foot square plastic sheets. After sealing all the chimneys, seams, and anywhere else where air could conceivably leak, the company pumped the house full of sulfuryl fluoride, a potent insecticide manufactured by Dow Chemical under the trade name Vikane.
The pesticide was circulated inside the house by large fans left in several locat ns, and the fumigant content in the air was continuously monitored by electronic “sniffers” inside the house. Paramount employees Joseph D. Booker and Mike Weinman stayed up all night Wednesday to be sure the pesticide level inside the house did not fall, indicating a leak.
