Car hits bear;
no injuries
A Springfield, Va., family’s drive to the Shenandoah National Park was interrupted Saturday by a bear which apparently had also decided to spend the afternoon in the warm sunshine.
According to Trooper C. A. Moore, a 1981 Cadillac driven by Floyd W. Hartung was westbound on Rt. 211 three miles east of Skyline Drive about 1 p.m. Mr. Hartung said that a black bear came running out of the woods on the right side of the road and ran in front of the car. “It rolled him over - I saw four paws up in the air,” Mr. Hartung reported. He said that by the time he got the car stopped “the bear was up and he took off running the way he was going.”
Mr. Hartung said that the front of the car struck the bear in the hindquarters, and the impact shattered the Cadillac’s grille. He added that he looked along the roadside to see if the bear had collapsed in the woods, but didn’t see anything.
Trooper Moore said that the bear might not have been seriously hurt; that the animal’s thick layer of fat and massive muscle structure often protects the bear from injury in a collision with a car1. He estimated the damage to the Cadillac at $450. 4
