A budding tradition
This weekend Sperryville will hold its second annual Apple Harvest Celebration. Admittedly, the idea of a tradition involving something which is in only its second year may be stretching things a bit.
Still, it’s nice to think that perhaps, at some point down the road a few years, the Sperryville festival may acquire the kind of stature among the many events of the year that the Trinity Church House Tour and Dried Flower Sale has today. There is certainly room in Rappahannock County for a few more events which attract people from such great distances.
And the festival has been good for Sperryville. There has been a lot of cooperation among the local merchants, residents and civic organizations in preparing for the event. It seems, as you look at the Sperryville Business Council’s brochure describing the festival, that every other house in town has something special planned for the weekend. That cannot help but be good for the community, and for its spirit.
Among the special events planned for the weekend are two free concerts by Rappahannock native John Jackson, who has made an internationally recognized reputation by singing the songs he learned as a child in Rappahannock. Mr. Jackson is understandably pleased to be performing so close to his childhood home, and the concerts promise to be an extraordinary part of the weekend.
The only variable will be, as always, the weather. But, rain or shine, Sperryville will be celebrating the apple harvest this weekend. We hope to see you there.
