I think the supervisors are attempting to see that concerns of adjoining landowners are dealt with in a responsible manner.”
Mr. McCarthy added that his comment about the nearest residents living “at least a mile away” was “an inappropriate exaggeration - not to address the concerns of landowners who do, in fact, live within one mile of the proposed site.”
Both Mr. McCarthy and Mr. Gilkey said they realize that anyone living near a landfill is going to be extremely unhappy and concerned by that fact. They added that the county is hard pressed to find a suitable site, but that the concerns of the county’s residents would be addressed during the application process.
“I know we’re going to upset people - whatever we do,” Mr. Gilkey said. “But I feel like if this thing flies it will benefit all residents of the county in the long run.”
