Conventional wisdom would suggest that in a school of about 400, there is bound to be a thief or two. In years past at Wakefield that has been the case, but this year, students, faculty and administration have tried a new approach - and it’s working, at least so far.
In remarks made at a school assembly during the second week of school, Headmaster William Lynn defined a school as, among other things, “a community of trust.” He said that in such an atmosphere of trust, anyone should feel secure about leaving his personal belongings unattended anywhere in the school or grounds. “Anyone,” he said, “should be able to leave a $5 bill on a table and return to find it undisturbed.” After discussing the idea with seniors, Mr. Lynn did just that.
