by runners
Rappahannock played host to a four-school cross-country meet last Wednesday on the Panthers’ home course near Sperryville. Fifty-three runners challenged the demanding trails, and when the dust settled both the Rappahannock boys and girls teams placed second, nudged from the gold by a strong one-threefive showing by the Stonewall Jackson harriers in the boys race and a powerful one-two punch from SWJ’s Craven sisters in the girls run.
John Kagey (SWJ) paced the pack for the boys along the 2.8 mile course, shattering Marley Hay’s course record to finish the run in 16:48. Manassas Park’s Adam Messier ran nearly a minute behind the winning time to nab a silver with a finish of 17:43. Marley Hay, continuing his strong performances so far this season, stuck to Messier’s heels but was unable to overtake him. Hay bettered his time by nearly a minute, finishing in 17:53. Randolph Macon Academy could manage only a fifth place finish for their lead runner.
