The Apple Harvest Celebration actually grew out of an annual craft show sponsored by the Sperryville Antique Market, owned by Peggy and Arthur Smith. Four years ago the Antique Market held its first fall craft show, “and we were really apprehensive,” Peggy Smith recalled. “We coordinated the event with the Trinity Church House Tour and Dried Flower Sale (which will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Oct. 18 and 19) and the response was beyond anything we could have hoped for. Every year it has gotten better.”
Last year the fledgling Sperryville Business Council coordinated the event, “trying to get the entire town involved,” Tom Junk explained. “The SBC has done a super job for being just two years old,” he said, adding that the council had printed and mailed 15,000 brochures advertising this year’s festival. “It’s great, the way everyone has pulled together to make the festival a big success,” Mrs. Smith said.
She noted that this year’s celebration should be bigger than ever, as the town has four new shops since last year and more shops are providing a greater variety of special events than they have had before. “We’re expecting a booming weekend,” she concluded.
