To the editor:
The difficulties that the Board of Supervisors face in finding a dump site for the county’s refuse must not be permitted to stand in the way of objective consideration of the suitability of a proposed site on the Lee farm.
If access to this site is to be from Fodderstack Road, it would mean that all dump bound traffic would pass through either Washington or Flint Hill and the nearby densely settled residential areas. Fodderstack Road is narrow, winding, hilly, subject to flooding and icing, and near the proposed exit there is a blind summit. An alternative access, from Route 211, is available that would have none of Fodderstack’s problems.
If burning is permitted at the site, it will cause air pollution as well as visual pollution near Washington, our county seat.
If the dump is to be an open one, there will be an unintended scattering of trash along the roads leading to the dump, including the towns of Flint Hill and Washington. Also, eliminating the dumpsters around the county will increase the unauthorized, deliberate roadside trash disposal all over, causing serious and costly policing problems.
