Signs next to the basket read, “Thou shalt not steal,” “Let us trust one another,” and “This unattended money is a symbol of our mutual trust and honesty.” The money is not marked and is not set up to be a trap to catch thieves.

The students quickly dubbed the basket containing the money the “Honesty Bowl.” Dollar bills, coins, a calculator and even a package of chocolate chip cookies ended up in the bowl by the end of the first week.

Just the other day, the headmaster added, a 6th grader rushed to him with money he had found on the playground. In handing over the money the student asked, “Could it, sir, go into the Honesty Bowl?”
