That s not simply viewing an experiment that the teacher conducts in the front of the room - that’s ‘hands-on’ experience,” Mr. Estabrook said. With no water, no gas and no individual lab stations, Rappahannock cannot come close to meeting that mandate, he pointed out. As further evidence of the need for additional space at the high school, the administrators noted:
- the lack of the state-mandated multi-purpose room for the provision of special education programs for the physically handicapped.
- health classes that meet on the stage.
- students forced to eat lunch in classrooms and halls because of insufficient space in the cafeteria.
- guidance offices that can only be reached by a promenade through the library.
- valuable library space which must be given over to aiidio-visual storage.
- a computer lab area squeezed into a partitioned section of a math classroom.
- the single carrel for independent study provided in the library.
- failure to meet the state’s mandate for a clinic.
These and other deficiencies were cited by a visiting committee which evaluated the high school for accreditation in 1980, Mr. Estabrook recalled. Most would be corrected by the proposed RCHS capital outlay.
The construction project approved by the state for a Literary Loan award will give RCHS a new gymnasium that seats 750, locker rooms, a multi-purpose room for physical education programs for the handicapped, a health classroom, special education classroom, rest rooms and storage, all built to the rear of the school and the side of the building next to the ball field.
The existing gym would be remodeled into an auditorium with elevated seats for 350 and an overhead projection booth. The back portion where the bleachers are now would be a cafeteria area seating about 300, with collapsible tables so that it could be used for other functions. The kitchen would be expanded into the current cafeteria with a walk-in cooler and loading dock added on as new construction.
