Jonathan Watson (19:12) and Neil Burke (19:47) placed second and third for the Panthers, running better races than ever before, according to Coach Ann Spieker. Rounding out the top six for Rappahannock were John Dodson (21:06), Rodney Grimsley (21:23) and Dan Herman (also 21:23).
Coach Spieker added that “most all the Rappahannock runners knocked between one and one and a half minutes off their times on the home course. Wesley Jenkins dropped his time by a full five minutes off his previous best for the hilly course.”
The lady Panthers put in a strong showing in the meet as well. They were unable to best the team of Craven and Craven, the Stonewall Jackson sisters who blistered the course in 20:58 and 21:20, capturing first and second places overall. Bonnie Grimsley was the first Rappahannock girl to finish, taking third place in 21:43. Denice Eidson (5th, 23:09); Kathy Dodson (7th, 23:39); Annette Mueller (9th, 24:15); and Leslie Nichols (15th, 32:20) rounded out the Rappahannock ranking over the tough course to place the Panthers second overall.
Coach Spieker said that “I have been very pleased with the attitude and determination shown by both the boys and girls at the last two meets. The support each other and enjoy the sport while working hard to win against the other schools (six so far this season).”
She added that the next two Wednesday meets will be tri-meets on Rappahannock’s home course. Coach Spieker urged everyone to come out and support Rappahannock’s harriers, following the large turnout for last week’s meet.
