After two weeks of verbal sparring, Virginia lawmakers on Saturday approved a historic tax revenue tax package that will help fund Gov. Gerald L. Baliles’ massive transportation program.
The governor had asked for about $570 million annually over a 10-year period. But an election-conscious General Assembly gave him considerably less than that. Members of both chambers — 40 senators and 100 delegates — are up for reelection next November.
Because of their tightfistedness, the timeframe for the statewide construction program will be extended by two years, the governor said Saturday.
Still, the governor seemed pleased with the outcome, telling lawmakers: “For the first time, we have in place a source of revenue for transportation tied to economic growth and inflation . . . Critically needed highways and roads will be built.”
