Apparently, the disorder is triggered by the reaction of some individuals’ bodies to the decrease in the hours of sunlight as the days shorten in the fall, Mr. Nettles explained. People affected by the disorder generally manifest symptoms of depression until spring. Following an upswing in their moods over the spring and summer, the cycle repeats the following fall.
“The recognition of the disorder provides a biological explanation for the cabin fever phenomenon,” which has long been accepted by mental health professionals, Mr. Nettles said.
