“This Constitutional amendment could provide a framework for a solution to runaway spending that has plagued the federal government for the last several decades,” Mr. Slaughter explained.
“As an original sponsor of the Balanced Budget Amendment, I urge the adoption of this amendment as a critically needed measure in our efforts to deal with the problem of the federal deficit,” he said.
“The makers of the Constitution established a flexible amendment procedure in order to meet the contemporary needs of the people. The House should use this procedure to aggressively meet one of the most serious issues facing the Congress and the nation — chronic federal overspending,” said Mr. Slaughter, a member of the House Judiciary Committee.
The Balanced Budget Amendment must be passed by a two-thirds vote of Congress and a'three-fourths margin of the states before being added to the Constitution.
Virginia is one of the many states that require a balanced state budget each year by law.
