He said that it is important to debunk several dangerous myths about suicide:
• The person who talks about it won’t do it. “They do.”
• Because a person has tried once they aren’t really serious and they won’t harm themselves. “They will.”
An unfortunate truth about suicide is that it is “contagious,” Mr. Nettles said. Statistics indicate that a significant percentage of the population is in some Stage of depression at any given time, so some portion of those individuals are probably depressed enough to have considered suicide.
“It is on their minds. The main inhibitor is fear - that they will screw that up like everything else. Fear keeps most people from acting on those thoughts.”
A successful suicide may loosen those inhibitions, spurring “copycats,” especially in small, tightlyknit communities, or when the original victim has high visibility.
He was quick to add, however, that “I am not aware of any statistics which indicate that public information, awareness and education contribute to an increase in suicide.”
