Sumptuous seafood
The Virginia seafood industry is one of America’s oldest.
In 1607, Virginia settlers were taught by the Indians how to catch and cook seafood, including sea scallops, blue crab, oysters, clams, fluke, sea trout, sea bass, soft-shell crabs, scup, and squid.
Flavorful fruits
Many native fruits were found by the settlers on their arrival in the New World, including the crabapple.
European grafting wood was brought to Virginia, grafted to the native crabapple trea, and so began apple production in the early 1600s. In 1641, Governor Berkley directed the planting of apple and other fruit trees by anyone holding a patent of 100 acres of land. He set an example by planting 1,500 trees at his mansion.
In the early 1700’s, Virginia’s Albemarle Pippin was established as a natural for export trade because of its ability to withstand rough handling and its storage qualities.
In 1837, after Queen Victoria received a barrel of Pippins, she was so delighted with Virginia apples that she removed the import duty on American apples. Since then, apples
