God send us a howling crop! A festive farmer leads the wassailing to ensure a bountiful apple crop in the coming year.
Grab a drum, some bells or any ngisemaker and meet in the apple orchard Dec. 20, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Claude Moore Colonial Farm at Turkey Run in McLean.
After banging their drums to frighten away the evil spirits, the wassailers join hands in an Apple Tree Dance and sing 18th century carols. The admission fee of $2 for adults and $1 for children includes a cup of steaming cider and an oldfashioned gingercake.
