These differences affect the way each spouse approaches the marriage, and the expectations that each has from it.
Times of stress may affect these personal differences negatively, with resulting conflicts. How we negotiate and resolve these differences determines how successful the marriage will be. A marriage counselor can often help a couple better understand their interactional patterns and help them develop skills for a more satisfying relationship.
With patterns of mobility breaking up the traditional extended family and outside factors which put stress on the marriage itself, most couples desire even more the companionship found in the marriage relationship. This relationship needs to be nourished if it is to grow and meet the needs of the couple in a healthy way.
Unfortunately, too many couples wait to enter counseling until much damage has already been done. It may take a lot of forgiveness to reverse the hurt and frustration. I often ask couples for a time commitment during which neither will mention separation or divorce. If negative patterns developed over time are to be changed, it requires effort, motivation and change from both partners.
Marriage counseling can help couples change those negative patterns and promote personal, emotional and spiritual growth. Sometimes, however, people must overcome their initial feelings of anxiety or discomfort about visiting a counselor. ‘
