Sometimes, if the veteran is deceased, the family knows only his service number and approximate dates of service. We send anything we have into the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. Here, they reconstruct a file, and if possible, issue a Certificate of Sendee. This certificate is a certified document for all purposes, including VA benefits.
If the veteran is seeking serviceconnected disability benefits, it is very important to have proof that you were treated for those disabilities while in service or shortly after discharge from active duty (within the first year). We have had several veterans who were injured 40 years ago, and who have come in to file a claim for compensation. Without records, it is almost impossible. When all else fails, we resort to signed statements of persons who knew of the injury or illness. These are sometimes accepted as evidence.
