There’s a good healthy way to fight cold-weather cabin fever and winter weight gain: exercise. A dip in temperature shouldn’t chill your enthusiasm for keeping in shape. If you exercise caution, working out in the cold can be safe, pleasant and invigorating.
Keeping fit is a good way to fight the winter doldrums. Think of this also: if you stay in shape the next few months, you’ll be better prepared to resume outdoor sports in the summer.
Dr. Richard Gayle, a professor of health and physical education at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, suggests how to winterize your workout to prevent iiyury and illness:
• Dress properly. Wear multiple layers of clothing. The air trapped between each layer serves as a great insulator. Also, the outer layer can be added or discarded, as needed.
