be trucked from the Wayne National Forest in Marietta, Ohio, to the west lawn of the Capitol, and by a 24foot Fraser fir, grown on a Christmas tree farm near Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
The Capitol’s tree will be the first to be lit. Its 3,600 lights in clear, amber and blue will be turned on Dec. 9, landscape architect Paul Pincus said. And from a distance, the tree will look twinkling gold at night.
Pincus said the U.S. Forest Service will furnish the tree, as it has done for each of the last 24 years. The service selects the forest and offers three or four candidates. Pincus then chooses the tree.
“I look for trees that are more or less symmetrical and are at least 55 feet tall,” he said. “If they’re any shorter than that, they’ll look too small next to the Capitol. ’ ’
Private truckers then vie for the honor of transporting the tree to Washington.
On Dec. 10, the living national tree on the Ellipse will be lit, opening the annual Christmas Pageant of Peace.
