because of Sen. Trible's conviction that Virginia voters will support the Republican nominee for president, Mr. Miller said, “Robb can be defeated.”
State Republican Party Chairman Donald W. Huffman said that although Mr. Robb is perceived as winning the Senate campaign, “we; intend to find a good candidate and; already have someone in mind. ”
Mr. Huffman would not reveat who that might be.
A fiscally conservative Southern candidate who appeals even to mod-; erate/liberal Republicans, Mr. Robb could run into difficulty statewide because he will have to run witK whomever is selected as the Demo-: cratic presidential nominee.
“He can’t continue with his moderate/conservative political posture and be seen in concert with the 1988 Democratic presidential conten-; ders,” Mr. Huffman said. ;
Mr. Robb said “We’ll have to! wait and see who the Democratic: nominee is. However, concerning a potential ideological conflict, I would not feel bound by the position of anyone else.”
