holiday season opens officially on Dec. 13 with the Grand Illumination of the city. During this event (which is free, open to the public, and usually attended by more than 20,000 spectators), a cannon blast signals the lighting of hundreds of candles in windows of the 400 restored and reconstructed public and private buildings.
An evening of merriment follows, replete with an 18th-centurystyle fireworks display, outdoor singing, dancing and musical performances on stages located at the Palace, Capitol and Powder Magazine.
The period from Grand Illumination through New Year’s almost daily features candelight concerts and recitals. There are special holiday lectures, films and decorating workshops, and tours focus on the wreaths, garlands and greens that decorate the historic area.
