Whole grain cereals supply fiber in the diet. Oatmeal, an old standby, is enjoying a resurgence of popularity as it has water soluble fiber which appears to help in reducing blood cholesterol levels.
Most cereals are fortified with vitamins and minerals. Even though some cereals can provide 100 percent of the daily requirements of some nutrients, that seldom has to be a factor in selecting the cereal.
“There is no need to be getting all the nutrients from one bowl of cereal,” Ms. Barton said. “Eating a variety of food all during the day is the way to get all needed nutrients.”
She cautioned that many cereals that are not fortified and classified as “all natural” are higher in sugar and calorie content. Consumers should be aware of this when buying cereal.
