WHO WAS JESUS?
I believe that Jesus was the very one he claimed to be. I also accept the reliability of the biblical record. Therefore, I accept Jesus as the very one the early church portrayed him to be. Their view of the claims of Jesus is consistent with the original intention of those claims. Nothing essential was lost in transmission. However, this does not hold for the myriad of translations into later languages and cultures. It is only by the faithful recovery of the biblical setting that we can make sense for our own time. This recovery effort of recent years is the main reason for so many new versions of the Bible.
In spite of the many nuances overlooked throughout our history, the integrity of Jesus came through remarkably well. Jesus was the very first to address God as "Father." Moreover, he used the common household term abba to communicate his complete familiarity with the Lord of creation. His contemporaries were quite offended by this "innovation."
