On Thursday the class was introduced to Seventh District Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr.
We’ve been under the excellent supervision and direction of high school teacher Jon Heddleston, affectionately known as “Mr. H.” Mr. Heddleston wrote and directed this program, especially made for Rappahannock County students, himself. Unfortunately, no Rappahannock students have chosen to attend this program this year, opting instead for another program in neighboring Culpeper County. The four counties represented by students in “The Mountains” program this summer are Accomack, Culpeper, Fauquier and Madision.
We were driven to 29 different places in two weeks by our faithful bus driver, Mary Bailey.
Some of the students’ opinions of the program were, “It’s good,” “I like it,” “I want to come back next year,” and “Weirdness is excellent” (okay, who put that one in?).
They listed as their favorite activities: hiking up Stony Man Mountain, swimming at Lake Arrowhead and in the Rush River, and tjie perennial favorite, lunch!
I think that Mr. Heddleston has done a wonderful job in teaching this program. As the daughter of a teacher, I can understand how much hard work he has put into this. I sincerely hope he will again present this program next year.
