To the editor:

In the Aug. 3 edition of the Rappahannock News, Roderick I. Sweet reported that, after a visit to Massachusetts, he “shuddered” to think of the consequences to the nation if Gov. Michael Dukakis had been electecd president last November.

The evidence presented by Mr. Sweet showed a frustrated governor cutting back on a variety of programs, most of which, dealt with social and educational matters, after the state legislature had refused to enact a tax increase. The action taken by Gov. Dukakis at the expense of his personal popularity, was, I submit, both courageous and responsible.

On this point, I suggest a comparison of his willingness to act with the equivocation of our present and past presidents in similar circumstances.
