By MARY K. BLEWITT f Arundel Newspapers State Writer , The issues of Virginia’s gubernatorial race continued to be overshadowed by talk of debates at a Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce luncheon held last Friday, Aug. 18.
Republican J. Marshall Coleman and Democrat Lt. Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, rivals for the governor’s seat, eventually agreed to two statewide televised debates before a crowd of 600 people at the Sheraton Premiere at Tysons Comer.
Originally touted as a debate, the chamber event became a joint ap.pearance after Coleman insisted that he had never agreed to the debate. , Last month, Wilder was responsible for transforming a debate at Virginia Beach into separate press conferences. Wilder refused to debate when he discovered that the Coleman campaign planned to film , the event and charged that Coleman had broken debate rules. As a result, the question of debates , has played center stage during the month of August and the issues of concern to the Commonwealth have become the backdrop.
“I apologize to the people of Vir-„ ginia for both of us,” Wilder told members of the press. “I think that the people of Virginia are entitled to better.” , Coleman, too, apologized to the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce for having gotten caught in some cross-fire.
