The Lions also have an auction in May; last year the proceeds from this paid for the new scoreboard in the high school’s new gymnasium. In addition, the club sets up a stand at most of the county’s bigger gatherings and sells nuts, brooms and light bulbs along with the apple butter. ‘This year at the Fourth of July celebration we made $275 which we gave to the Washington Volunteer Fire Department, along with an additional $225. We made donations to the other fire departments in the county also, because they , always need it, especially this year after everyone took a financial beating from a soggy Fourth,” she added.

With many county organizations faltering due to financial troubles, lack of interest and declining membership, the Rappahannock Lions Club remains strong, a testament to hard work and determination, according to its new president.

But the Lions are by no means satisfied, she emphasized. “We need new blood to continue our success. This means more members, especially from the younger generation in Rappahannock. Any one interested in community service should drop by the School House Restaurant on a Wednesday night. We’d love to have them,” Mrs. Pike concluded.
