I he other hot topic this year is drugs, t,veryone, especially the politicians up for re-election in November, is making a ritual expression of concern over the toll which drugs are taking in this country. President Bush (though he's not up for re-election) is set to unveil yet another “War on Drugs” early in September.
I don’t know about my readers, but I’m old enough to remember the last 20 years. Without doing any research, I think we’ve probably had an announcement about a new’ “War on Drugs” about every other year, at least. Remember when President Bush was Vice-President Bush, and headed an inter-agency task force to coordinate the federal “War on Drugs"?
It wasn't one of his major success stories.
The fact is, as my parents told me many years ago, you can’t legislate morality. And you especially can’t do it w hen immoral conduct is so financially attractive. Where else can a 15-yearold kid make $10,000 to $15,000 a week? Not as the editor of a community newspaper, I can assure you.
