Bill Adair of the Fairfax Journal asked Coleman about his plan to put the names of drug users in local newspapers. Coleman stressed the need to have individual accountability. He criticize Wilder, saying that the lieutenant governor had not made any effort to fight drugs during his term.
Both candidates, who have received campaign contributions in the $100,000’s from individual contributors, were asked if there were any campaign contributions of any size which they would not accept. Responding that there was no law in Virginia limiting the amount they were permitted to accept, both candidates accused each other of having larger contributions, adding that the contributions would not effect their decision-making as governor.
The only true debate took place between Donald S. Beyer Jr. and Sen. Edwina P. “Eddy” Dalton, Democratic and Republican candidates for the office of the lieutenant governor respectively. Sabato called the debate a “wash” with no one candidate appearing stronger or weaker than the other.
There remained, however, no winner among the gubernatorial candidates.
“It’s tough to lose a non-debate,” Dr. Sabato said.
