“Advertising costs money; money that could help an Indian family,” Mrs. Myers said of her low profile. She feels that her satisfied customers are her best advertising.

And happy customers also advertise the artists — silversmiths, weavers, painters, sculptors, singers and dancers -- representing tribes and reservations from North Carolina to South Dakota, who offer a weekend of education for anyone who stops.

Mrs. Myers’ one concession to publicity, a mailing list, lets her regular customers from as far away as New York know of upcoming visiting artists.

“The Indians like coming here, and want to know when they can come back,” she said, adding that through the shop, both the Indians and the community benefit. “It’s educational for everyone.”
