Working on the theory that feeding a person one day means they will need to be fed again, but teaching them to feed themselves makes them more self-sufficient, the Fund began working toward setting up cottage industries on the reservation. Those small beginnings supplied work, income and also, most importantly, personal satisfaction to several thousand Native Americans, Mr. Myers explained. For many, it was their first experience with success.
“We just wanted to create jobs for them,” he said, explaining the beginning of their buying trips to the Southwest and the origin of the Trading Post. “We would supply the marketing outlet.”
“At first,” Mrs. Myers added, “it was just announced that Bernice Myers from Virginia was interested in buying goods.” She made trips to the reservations, to Indian fairs and pow-wows, nationwide meetings of Indians who gather for friendship, rituals, dance competitions and selling artifacts and crafts.
