A quarter-century ago, in August, 1964, President Johnson signed legislation creating Volunteers in Service to America — the VISTA program.
Since then, nearly 100,000 Americans have given a year of their lives to serve in low-income communities as VISTA volunteers. Few citizens have worked so hard or shared so much of themselves in the fight to end poverty in our country.
As we celebrate VISTA’s 25th anniversary, we honor the great achievement of VISTA volunteers, past and present, and we ask all Americans to join VISTA in helping poor communities gain a strong, new future.
Under the leadership of President George Bush, VISTA will continue to mobilize volunteers and resources, to bring hope where there has been despair, and to help low-income communities grow through self-sufficiency and local initiative. VISTA volunteers will take the lead in demonstrating, as the President has said, that “From now on. in America, any definition of a successful life must include serving others.”
