$169.7 million and the land use value of $88 million.
Rappahannock’s Board of Supervisors has indicated that it wants to take another look at the land use program when the next reassessment occurs, perhaps in 1991-92 to take effect with the taxes paid in the fall of 1992. One possibility being considered is limiting land use taxation to land in Agricultural and Forestal Districts, which is committed for a 10-year period, or land on which a permanent scenic easement has been donated, or open space land which is also committed to open space for a period of 10 years.
Fauquier County went through the reassessment process this year and its supervisors considered making similar changes to their program, but ended up keeping general land use and adding a category for open space land which is included in Agricultural Districts. The open space assessments are expected to be higher than those for agricultural land, but will not depend on soil type or require that the land be actually farmed.
Meanwhile, in Rappahannock County, the supervisors will have to decide what changes if any they want to make to the land use program in time for them to take effect with a new reassessment. The Planning Commission has established a committee to study the health and future of farming in the county. The results of that committee’s work could lead to recommendations to the supervisors for changes in the land use program.
