Wilder released a memo discussing his pro-abortion stance, stating, "My opponent thought he could deceive the public and claim that he had changed his previous abortion views, when in fact he has secretly promised ban-abortion groups that he will gladly sign legislation that prohibits abortions, even in cases of rape and incest."
“I think his (Wilder’s) biggest challenge remaining is to continue to run a positive campaign while running against a man who is known for running a negative campaign,” said Calhoun.
Finally, Culpeper Mayor Waller P. Jones introduced Wilder, saying that he was "the best qualified candidate for governor in years." Jones then presented Wilder with a key to the town.
Zann Embrey, the chairman of the Culpeper Democratic Committee, said in an introductory speech at the Culpeper rally that "our candidates do not spend million to nominate themselves and then call themselves conservatives.”
“It’s important for Doug to get to the voters on a one to one basis,” Embrey said. “He must continue to see and be seen by the voters.”
