communities in organizing self-help projects, garnering private support and recruiting local' volunteers — making sure that when their VISTA service ends, strong, growing programs continue in the community.
VISTA volunteers are provided only a modest allowance, based on local poverty rates. They seek no reward beyond knowing that they have made a difference where the need was great and challenges were many.
By sharing with others, VISTA Volunteers gain unparalleled experience and leadership skills. They learn what works. They learn that battles against illiteracy, drug abuse, homelessness, and every other aspect of poverty can be won with commitment, perseverance and full support from the community.
We will celebrate VISTA’s 25th anniversary beginning with the Aug. 20 commemoration of its founding legislation and ending in January, the month when VISTA Volunteers first entered service. Through VISTA anniversary publicity and events, we will reach out to all Americans for participation and support, especially to college students and recent college graduates, urging them to consider a year of VISTA service.
