Jim was already a member of a Lions Club in Northern Virginia and was welcomed enthusiastically by the Rappahannock branch. Mrs. Pike drove Jim to the Wednesday night meetings at the Comer Post restaurant for six years. Because women were not allowed in the Lions’ ranks at that time, she sat with the Lions’ wives, but she was always aware of what was going on. “I liked what the group stood for,” Pike said.
Then two years ago when the rotary club was taken to court for discrimination on the basis of sex, exclusive male clubs throughout the , country changed their by-laws, allowing females to join. A month later Cecelia Pike was a Lion. “I didn’t join to prove a point or to be the first. I was already active with the group, so it only seemed natural fo me to join once I was allowed,” she said.
